Aha, This explains a lot! I had thought that the duty and GST threshold
was AUD50.00. AUD1000 makes much more sense in the light of my
experience with importing gear from the USA.

As a general rule Customs does not normally interest itself with parcels
arriving via the postal system having a declared value of less than
$A1000 and they come through free of duty and GST! If for some reason
duty is applied ( around 3% I believe) you will also have to pay GST
(10% ). Parcels arriving by other than the postal system normally have
to be cleared by an agent and as far as I know always attract duty, GST
and, of course, the agents fee.

I have just ordered a K2 and was wondering if any fellow Australians
have imported this kit. If so how much import duty does it attract?
Dave.
