Thanks to Ron,Vic, Fran and Don, for your help.  Sorry to you in 
particular Ron for the lengthy response where I should have made it 
clear that the problem was with SSB.  I will take a good look again at 
the BFO settings as I can only think that the fault lies in that area. 
Having said that,  whilst testing on 40m using my own K2 as a reference, 
rx'd signals sound fine, my own tx signal sounds fine, its just 800Hz 
higher than the frequency I'm receiving on.  I did try changing the BFO 
frequency either side of its nominal setting and, as you would expect, 
changed the tx audio characteristics but had no effect upon the freq 
split.
I'll keep you guys posted.
