Mike,
Hmmm. I have not noticed this particulary with the 457s yet, although I
have really only used them on my K2 so far. The volume control runs
between about 9 and 11 o'clock for a reasonable listening level on them.
Is this the same as the other model you speak of? I was going to compare
them to the comm headset that I use with my 756Pro (actually an aircraft
comm headset with a mic, works VERY well for Ham radio!), but got
sidetracked with checking out my K2 on 40m receive (just finished stage
2 of the RF board...). I don't have a large sample space of using these
headphones with radios, so your point is well taken. You should probably
foreard your email to the guy I sent my original to, (if you haven't
done so already), just so he has the full story. I will try the
Sennheisers in a few more applications and see if I can duplicate what
you are seeing with your pair...I did notice on Sennheiser's web page
that the nominal impedance for each of the models is the same, but that
the 457s put out 8db more SPL (measured at 1kHz) than the 495s do (114
vs. 106). Not sure if that is enough of a difference to explain what you
are talking about, although 8 db comes to about 6.2 times more power out
of my pair, which does seem like a lot.
