Funny how the knob has been a focus for so much comment over time.  Anyway, I've
used my K2 (#709) a lot, and the paint is fine.  I did try a Yaesu knob -- and I
know that others like them -- but the hole in mine was slightly off-center,
which bothered me.  I ultimately put the Yaesu rubber ring around the rim of my
Elecraft knob and have been happy ever since.
