My father was a jeweler/watchmaker. He had a high desk, high enough that 
when he sat down the worksurface was about mid-chest height. There was a 
drawer at about waist level that was actually a white canvas "apron". 
When he sat down he pulled the drawer out - it even had a curved front 
so it fit around his body. When he dropped a gear or wheel or diamond(!) 
it would fall into the "apron".

Of course I remember many times helping him look for parts on the floor!
