After noticing this thread I was looking up some stuff on the "Antique
Radio Supply" (www.tubesandmore.com) ... yes TUBES ... those things that
Edison and Fleming developed... I noticed under "Dials" that they sell
"lacquer sticks" for filling in engraving on panels. I've used them
before and they worked very well. They have them in various colors. If
they are like the ones I had, the lacquer is the consistence of wax. You
rub the stick over the engraving, then rub off the excess, just like
toothpaste, flour and water or the other mixtures described.

To get better results from filling the engraving with white crayon, or
the wood pencils with crayon center, (best of all for controlled
application to grooves); you can heat the filling up with a hair dryer
to distribute it evenly in the engraving lines. We do this on
production prototypes of science equipment. 72, Stuart K5KVH
