Our run-of-the mil engraving was done on two-tone material, the letters etc.
came out in the underlying material. Once in a while we made brass
nameplates for those special occasions as football matches and
anniverseries.
To fill in the letters, we used an ink called "East-Indian Ink". This came
in tubes with a rubber bulb at the bottom, you had to press this and the ink
came out. It was used by artists to make drawings. Simply allow the ink to
flow into the letters and dry up, then remove the surplus ink with a cloth.
The effect of the pitchblack letters on a polished brass plate was very
pleasing to the eye.

ps; we use a ticker-tape like printer now, there are see-through tapes
available for this as , and a font not unlike the one Elecraft uses.
