Thanks for the info!
Just goes to show you what a "signal generator" will do if it's coupled
to an antenna!! That's a "real" contact over a significant distance.
It's clear the other station had a great set of "ears" working too. Was
the other op using an Elecraft rig?
You are right about the take-off angle, but a Yagi will have no lower
angle IF it's at the same height. It's all about height above ground for
a horizontal antenna.
That's why dipoles up at 1/2 wave or so above the ground will often
out-perform big yagis down lower.... and why verticals will out perform
both of them for long skip when the horizontal antennas are too close to
the ground.
Congratulations!

Ok, here are the details of the QSO. I took the K1 and turned it down
to
the lowest power I could - I have that pegged at 200 mWatts. Then I
brought in the Ten-Tec Attenuator to cut it down to 0.8 mWatts.
...Some might think the dipole was a disadvantage. Not always true. At
390
miles the best takeoff angle is around 35-45 degrees - depending off
course
on the exact height of the F layer that day. If I had either a beam or
a
vertical most likely the takeoff angle from either of them would have
been
too low and sent most of the signal right over his head.
