Thank you for the detailed explanation, Wayne.  My K2 is S/N 438 and its 
manual stated a min of 12kHz for the shift.
Yes, the artifacts were always present in my K2, but not a problem. 
 Since the stability mod (AND after returning it to pre-mod status), I 
get a frequency jump at those boundries.  In other words, if I am tuning 
across a signal near a boundry, it will abruptly disappear as the 
frequency takes a jump.  I thought it must be from the reduced shift 
(remember, my book says min 12kHZ!).  That is why I removed the mod, but 
the freq jump continues on the boundries even after doing CAL PLL 
several times on 40M.  I may try putting the mod back in and see what 
happens, but any idea what else to look for that could be causing this?
