At this very moment I am looking at the latest Quartermaster 3&2 Navy
Training Manual.  This training manual still contains requirements to KNOW
morse code, Use lights (visual CW), Decipher CW signals from buoys and
structures (navigation hazards) that emit CW information (location,
position, channel markers, etc.) and the use of semaphores and flags.  

A Seaman (E-3) is required to KNOW this to advance to PO-3 or Third Class
(E-4).  Even the smallest ship I was on had several Quartermaster Petty
Officers.   

I think this topic of this thread is a "Sea Story."
