When I was (and worked!)  in the Signal Corps, a "quick and dirty" test of
weather balloon tracking radar was done by pointing the dish antenna at an
empty training barrack. We could judge by the number of fluorescent lighting
tubes on the ceiling that went on at the same time if the pencil beam needed
sharpening ie bringing back into focus. If  I remember correctly, the servo
amplifiers had thyratrons, they lit up to a bright blue when the antenna was
moved.

We allways had a good supply of large warning signs in our mobile workshop,
these worked wonders on excersises etc in keeping the officers away.
