Hi Gang,
Got a bit of a late start today. Was really more checking out the new
portable setup with the K1 and also scouting a local park out for a
possible location for QRPTTF and Field Day with my friend Joe W1GFH,
than serious contesting. It worked out great! There's some nice tall
trees to suspend the antenna from. Since the K1 has the internal tuner,
I got 40' of wire straight up into the air, going right to the K1 and
used 4 33' ground radials. The BNC to Banana posts adapter came in very
handy for this. BTW the Mountain Ops Tac Pack for the K1 showed up
yesterday, and the complete station, including an extra set of Maha 2000
mAH AA's, the antenna, Palm paddles, pens and mini log all fit into the
case. The whole station is no bigger than a 35mm camera case and very
light weight. The only extra piece of gear we took along, was the
EZ-Hang. This setup should be great for this years camping and TTF event
and whenever I just feel like spending a couple of hours at the park.
As far as operating goes, we worked a few stations, but had a few
onlookers approach us and ask what we were up to and that took away from
the operating. Joe worked a few station as well as myself. We listened
on 15, 20 and 40 meters, but all contacts were on 20 and 40. Here's who
I worked:
20 Meters:
WB5QYT Tom NM
K0EVZ Doc ND
K7TQ Randy ID
WQ0RP Jim MN
40 Meters:
W6MV Philip CA
Not a lot of contacts for about an hour of operation, but it was fun to
get on and test out the portable setup. Local temp was around 70F so not
exactly FYBO condx! Next year I think we'll plan a trip around the event
and get more serious about getting contacts. All contacts were with 3
watts except for WQ0RP where I bumped it up to 5. Take care and look for
me next weekend on the air from Joshua Tree National Park again as we'll
be camping there.
