The regulator might be easily available from Mouser, or Digikey, or surplus
sources such as Dan's Small Parts on web.
There is an old trick we have done with single transistor series regulators,
which I think can be done on the three terminal type. Take a 7805, and
place a silicon diode in series with the ground pin. See if that does not
raise the output to 5.6 volts DC under load. You may have to figure which
way the cathode should be toward 7805 or not. Two diodes in series would
give you 6.2 VDC, etc. Almost any diode should work, if it has good PIV.
Not sure of the tolerance of the 6 volt bus on this part of the rig, but it
is something when all else fails. Probably someone on the list will have an
extra 7806 to offer.
