Your story sounds much like mine. I was building kits when it was the only 
way I could afford a rig. I spent much time in the early 60's hovering over 
my first VFO rig, the Knight T-150, checking into the South Carolina CW Net, 
SCN. I spent time on 4RN and some on EAN. I held down a shift as NCS. I could 
recognize other operators by their fist, straight key or bug, no keyers. NTS 
is not dead at all, as far as I can tell. These days I check into the Georgia 
CW Net, GSN as often as I can. It's a great anchor for my operating 
activities. We don't pass any important traffic, but the point is training 
and preparedness. I agree with you that Elecraft and CW are natural partners. 
I have two of the K-1's (my version of the four band module). I'm working up 
the courage to take on the K-2. It's just a matter of time. I'm learning all 
the tricks of the trade by following the reflector here.
