You might want to read the interesting USCG CW radio operator
memoirs by Jeffrey Herman, KH2PZ/KH6:

At Dayton a couple of years ago, the RSGB booth was selling a book-length
memoir of a British merchant marine radio officer who served in the 1970s.
It was very interesting, but I can't remember the title or author.  I'll see
if I can find my copy when I get home.
