It has been fascinating for me to hear the stories of Morse from past
usage. My inspiration for becoming a ham was my father who was a radio
man on a Norwegian merchant ship in the late forties, and I remember him
head copying what was to me quite a mysterious language from the old
Hallicrafters S40A that he had brought with him home from a trip.
I couldn't resist thinking about the original title of this thread, and
here are some figures from http://www.morsecode.dutch.nl/iambic.PDF
which at the end contains the number of strokes per character for
different methods. Examples:
G = 3 strokes with straight key, 3 strokes with a bug and 2 strokes with
an iambic paddle.
The whole alphabet + numbers: 132, 87, 69 strokes respectively.
So this should indicate that here is some saving for the paddle after
all.
