Dave,
I can say that I share your experience in the contest.
Worked also with K2 at 5 watt and a poor 20m randowm wire.
Could work 130 QSO's, only one W6, the rest mainly east coast and a vew
canadian stations. No 160m, only a few on 80m.
I could work many of the big guns 4 times on the bands above 40m.
The K2 performed very well, even if the station could not copy me, I could
copy very well in the pileup's. Most annoying was the clicking from wrong
keying stations. Some times I could hear the clicking over a range of 10khz. :-(
Got some comments, like you, about the 5 watts.
Conclusion: Next year I need a better antenna!
Also I found the KAF2 very helpful to pull the signals out of the noise here.
I worked only S&P with 400hz filter setup and AF1 on.
And I believe I made a small failure with my exchange sending, send only "5" so
sometimes the op ask for "tt5 ?"
Next time I will do it right ;-)
Many thanks to all OP's which could copy my weak signal.
After working, as my first contest, in the cqww 2002 with my K1, the arrl contest was a good experience with the K2.
