[Elecraft] K1 Sidetone

Got a strange one. Building my second K1. I am at Alignment and Test, Part 1

Everything fine until Try to set STL(sidetone volume). Although I get the
indication of 0-31 on the LCD, I hear no sidetone. I do hear an audio 
rushing" noise, adjustable with the audio gain.
When I go to Menu STP(sidetone pitch) I DO hear the sidetone, and the pitch
is adjustable.
With paddles plugged in, the audio mutes with keying, but no sidetone.

Just for the heck of it, I tried the memory keyer.  It counts down when
keying, although can't hear any sidetone.
Any quick ideas?
