This is a VERY common problem with AFSK type operation on HF digital modes.
Folks that run AFSK RTTY have that same issue IF
they have the processor on or overdrive the microphone input of their radio.
2KHz is the modulating frequency of their digital signal or AFSK. It's
called an image as you have correctly stated. I wish AFSK were illegal!
Most of the time the offender will try to tell you it's your receiver.
(There is NEVER anything wrong with their transmitter). Just ask someone who
splatters +- 10KHz on SSB.
