[Elecraft] Aviation Headset Wiring

Colin,

I have an aviation headset that I have used for years with my ICOM rigs.
It has been a wonderful headset - very comfortable and decent level out
on the mic as well. Now that my #3096 basic kit is done, and the SSB
option has been started, I amn thinking about what you describe.
Although I don't know what brand you have for headset, I imagine in
order to be compatible with airplane comm gear they must all be the
same. One point to consider along those lines. On my heaset, the
headphone plug is the standard 1/4" size, but the 3 conductor mic plug
(which you referred to in your email), is actually a different size that
is smaller than 1/4" (my recollection is that it is like .206", or some
strange size...) In my case when I made my adapter for my ICOM rig, I
was able to find some of the matching switchcraft jacks in this size,
but they are not all that easy to find normally in my experience. I
bought the fine Heil hand mic for the K2, so I am going to start with
that, but may eventually make an adapter for connecting my headset to
the K2 as well at some point. Gotta find time to finish the SSB option
first...

I am at work, but I can try to check the pinout on my headset when I am
next in the shack, if you wish. Drop me a direct email if you like and
I'll try to remember to check it out for ya.
