My backpack has a section at the very top that exactly accommodates
my K1, a small legal pad, and a a camp sized cutting board. I put the
pad and cutting board in, and the K1 rests on top. There's a zip pocket
just below that holds pen, key, and headphones.
For general travel, I found that the box my Alinco 330 PS came in
exactly matches the K1 in depth. Add a swisted roll of antenna wire with
a key in the center, and then whole thing just locks into place.
It isn't really a matter of ruggedness -- I just haven't learned to
see it as a tool. It still feels like a work of art to me :). If I had
regular opportunities for backpacking and camping, I'd just build a second
one -- explicity for field use -- that would develop its own "tough rig"
personality :).
