  Does this happen with earphones as well as with the speaker? or with a 
separate external speaker?  It is quite possible for there to be physical 
resonances in the speaker or the case or nearby objects that can make 
particular frequencies sound harsh and distorted.  If it happens also with 
the cans, then can you put the audio output to a scope to see what's 
happening?  Is the sound clipping (unless reduced by moving to the filter 
skirts)?  If so, then start tracing backwards along the audio path with the 
scope to see where the clipping is being introduced.  That should indicate 
the culprit.
