Jim and all,

Not urban legend, but fact.

In the early days of SSB, the 5 MHz and 9 MHz combination WAS one of the
reasons for LSB on 75 and USB on 20.  The carrier was on only one side of
the passband and it was easier to null the carrier for only one sideband
(especially with the phasing rigs).

It should work the same with either combination of VFO and IF - 5 minus 9 =
4 and 9 minus 5 also = 4 (the subtractive mixing inverts the sideband too),
and 5+9=14 and 9+5 also = 14.  So one achieved the sideband reversal without
changing anything at the balanced modulator stage (which was a 'touchy' area
of many early SSB transmitters).
