[Elecraft] KIO2 "Gotcha's" and "Trip Wires"?

As I'm about to embark on building and installing
a KIO2 in my K2, all of this "wrong serial cable"
traffic has got me a bit worried.
I'm assuming that the same disastrous consequences
arising from the use of a standard serial cable
might arise from an accidental "mis-wiring" of
the KIO2 or its custom serial cable. (I seem to
recall a poster a while back lamenting that he'd
blown his K2 as a result of an incorrectly
installed part or sloppy solder joint on his
KIO2).
Are there some steps or connections in the
assembly process that I need to be extra careful
about? Any possible "gotcha's" I need to be
aware of? Can I assume (that can be dangerous)
that if my KIO2 and cable pass their resistance
and continuity checks OK, the unit still may not
work but it won't fry my K2? :=)
I plan on triple checking my work as I go, as
usual for me, but think a little extra insurance
in the form of this List's sage advice is a wise
investment.
Happy holidays,
