Blake,

From your description, you have no ground reference for the keying signal
back to the K2, and that will make strange things happen - like your
'keying' through the serial interface.

Connect the keying ground to the shell (not the ring) of the stereo plug and
the keying signal line to the tip.  If this is a dedicated plug (not shared
with paddles), you can connect the keying signal line to both the tip and
ring if you want.
