Rolf,
In the computer world of big boxes, the device at the end of the cable is
wired to either connect or not connect the shield to the chassis and or
signal ground. That way the cable itself may have the shield connected so
the cable may be connected either way 'round'.

In the PC world, things may not be as structured, causing situations as you
describe.  The grounding at points to eliminate a problem (like ghosting)
can be from an ineffective shield.  But as I stated, the shield may become
ineffecive with common mode current.  A ground loop can cause common mode
currents.
