[Elecraft] RE: Circuit board soldering question

You guys have the right idea..slow.one part at a time and then solder. =
Difficult to make a mistake that way, yes?

I've been building for over 40 years and I get cocky. Stuff them all =
in, solder, power up and look for smoke.

I've surmised that it is a character flaw.

Now, being the compulsive, headstrong, cocky builder that I am, I've =
made a few mistakes.

Just questioned this wonderful reflector re: L31 on the RF board being =
12uH instead of 10uH and also asked for a RP-3 resistor network that was =
missing in my parts package. Richard sent me the RP-3, soldered it in =
and started to get a funny feeling about these two anomalies.

Yes, due to the improvement of the PPL circuit, RP-3 was omitted and L31 =
changed to 12uH. Had to butcher-out the RP-3 and lost a good hour of =
building time due to my stupidity.

So, for me, reading the manual AND THE ADDENDUMS and making note is =
first. Identifying the correct part and placement is second and =
soldering is third.

Richard at Elecraft says that 90% of the problems they see are solder =
related, 8-9% misplaced or wrong components and 1-2% bad components.

New years resolution: Muster some discipline and structure. Read =
everything! Solder in one part at a time!

(...And thanks to all you fine, knowledgeable guys for helping me =
overcome my shortcomings and not making me feel like a Novice.I'm doing =
a fine job of that myself!).
