[Elecraft] how did I calculate the loss?

Vic,
right on both points. The balun complicates things. Without a balun the =
vertical ground lead will radiate. The T-line energy will travel =
differentially between the two T-line wires and between the HOT wire =
(cause there's no balun at the K2) and earth ground. The earth ground =
T-line will be lossy. So, as you say a balun is needed at both ends. A =
voltge balun or a current balun? I would try a magnetically coupled 1:1 =
transformer at the K2 and at the antenna. The impedance needed is high =
for a current balun. But, those who know more about baluns might have a =
different take on this. Placing the tuner at the antenna sure is the =
clean solution.=20

I forgot to add...wouldn't you also need a balun at the antenna=20
feedpoint? If you connect the feedline directly to the antenna the=20
currents in the legs of the feedline could be unbalanced and then you=20
might have significant loss from feedline radiation.
