The thing is probably made here in Europe. The weak dollar probably has 
a lot to do with the high price in the USA.

$1.74 to �1!! There's never been a better time for us to buy Elecraft 
products! I wonder when our local dealers will start to drop the prices 
of US-made gear (e.g. MFJ) below the usual $1 -  $1 + 10% rip-off. I 
won't hold my breath waiting...

That was my first thought as well. Then I remembered that to market a 
product containing USB, you have to pay a licensing fee. It could be 
that the licensing fee is high enough that it can't be easily absorbed
