If size doesn't matter I would favor the K1 over the KX1. A better =
receiver, more TX power, more tuning range of the ATU, and an extra =
band. On the other hand, the built-in paddles on the KX1 are way cool, =
dude. I check the 40 meter novice band, hoping to give a QRS guy a QSO. =
But, I never hear any activity. If you call CQ at 7040 kHz or 14060 kHz =
at 8 WPM you will snag someone. Or, take the easy way- find a strong =
station calling CQ and give him a call. With the KX1 connected to a 25 =
foot wire tossed on the roof I can make a couple of QSO's per hour. I go =
thru 40/30/20 looking for CQ's. The first QSO was Europe from the west =
coast. The ease of use with the ATU allows one to operate from just =
about anywhere. This means more time on the air and less time wishing =
you were on the air.

Subject: [Elecraft] K1 or KX1
I'm new to cw/qrp! My Rock-Mite40 connects to a NorCal-BLT to a dipole =
fed with ladder line. I=20
can hear 14 stations at a time, but have never gotten any response to my =
CQs. My thinking is=20
that a K1/KX1 would allow me to tune more accurately and get to the =
novice areas where my 8-
wpm stands a better chance of a response. I'm not a hiker, but would =
like to take the rig on=20
trips so the size is not a critical factor. Fully loaded the costs are =
not too far apart. I'm not sure=20
if the additional 17/15 meter is a big plus for the K1. I'd appreciate =
your input. Anyone in the=20
Rochester NY area?
