[Elecraft] KX1 7.2V. Performance?

I can probably build the switching supply in a 1 x 1 x 0.25 inch format. =
But, I can't find any room in the KX1 for even that. Eveready AA NiMH =
cells are spec'ed at 2100 maH. The AAA is rated at 700 mAH. Doubling the =
voltage of the AA cells and accounting for switcher efficiency makes the =
six AA cells appear to have a capacity of 850 mAH. I wonder if there is =
room for 10 AAA cells in the KX1?. I am now using an external 1.2AH lead =
acid battery to run the radio but would the batteries to be =
self-contained yet give 3 watts of RF.=20
The alkalines don't look so good after a closer look at the specs. I can =
only extract about 2o% of the specified capacity before the voltage =
drops too low. I will pick up some Lithium's today and give them a try.

I think so. But since it would not fit inside the KX1, what's the=20
advantage over using a pack of 10 AA NiMH external to the rig? The=20
latter gives full power and is easy to implement.

cents and hour isn't too bad. With alkalines I figure I can get 10 hours =
for $2 of Rayovacs for only 20 cents an hour. But, for those who do like =
rechargables, but want a full 3 watts, I have something for you. I'm =
working on a small switcher that will double the NiMH voltage and then =
linear regulate it to 12 volts. Of course this halves the effective AH =
rating to begin with and then chops operating time further by upping the =
TX current. But, I estimate operating time of >10 hours with this =
approach.=20
