Hi Dennis,

The KX1 will work at 7.2 volts, putting out around 1 watt. (The actual minimum
is something like 6.5 V, but operating down to this level is not a good idea.)
As the batteries start to drop in voltage, the transmit keying envelope shape
will change slightly. This is why we recommend 8 volts or higher. Of course
lithium 1.5-V cells will also provide longer operating time and higher power
output. But I do occasionally use NiMH cells--I have lots of them, so I use them
as backup in case my lithiums finally die (which seems to take forever!).
