I just picked up the December 2003 CQ, because I saw that it had the 2003
scores
for the CQ WW 160m contest. I wanted to see how I had done with my 5w, K2
and
WimpyWire vertical.
I looked for the CA scores, and found them on p. 105. I found I had taken
first
place QRP in CA. Considering the handicap of operating from the west coast,
I
thought this was pretty good. Then being curious, I wondered if I had
beaten any
QRPers in other states/provinces.
Digging through the scores I found I had beaten the entered scores of QRPers
in 14
states/provinces--CT, ME, NJ, NY, MD, GA, NV, WA, MI, WV, CO, IA, VE2, VE7.
To be fair, I checked on how many state/province entries had beaten me.
There
were 10--MA, NC, VA, AZ, UT, OH, IL MN, MO, VE3. This didn't seem like a
very
long list, so I checked for states/provinces with no QRP entries. There
were 29--NH, RI, VT, DE, PA, AL, FL, KY, SC, TN, AR, LA, MS, NM, OK, TX, ID,
MT,
OR, WY, IN, WI, KS, SD, VO1, VY1, VE5, VE6, VE9.
I'm sure there were QRPers in the contest who just did it for the fun, and
never entered
their scores.
Ok, now I'm really getting greedy. Did I beat the top Low Power station in
any state/
province? Turns out there were 8--CT, MA, RI, AR, ID, WY, VE5, VE6. Wow,
QRP Lives!
Ok, what has this proved? Not a darned thing, really, other than that QRP
is a lot of
fun and can turn in surprising results in contests. But then, you already
knew that,
didn't you?
