Earl, K6SE, posted this with regard to the ARRL 160 Meter Contest this past
weekend <snips>:
"Elecraft chose me to be a field tester for the upcoming K2 click mod and I
completed the mod Saturday.
Before the mod, my K2's clicks were +/-1500 Hz and after the mod they are
less than +/-200 Hz, a remarkable improvement! I used the K2 (with KPA100)
in the contest Saturday night and it performed flawlessly while driving my
Alpha 76CA to 1kw. No one appeared to have any trouble copying my "softer"
CW signal at 30-35 wpm. The K2 will now be my prime contest rig."
I came upon K6SE "running" a frequency Saturday evening. I gave him several
calls, then gave it up when it soon became evident that my 5 watts to a
dipole wasn't going to make it to LAX. Earl couldn't even hear my key clicks
<g>! His signal was not particularly strong here in eastern Wisconsin, but
his was one of the few CA stations that I could copy well. I paused to
listen to him for a few moments instead of moving on to other stations
because the signal quality was so excellent. I selected my narrow 200 Hz
filter and the 2nd audio filter, sat back, and just enjoyed listening to his
pleasing, "musical" note as he called CQ and made several contacts. Imagine
then, if you will, my surprise when I read from his posting that he was
using his modified K2 Saturday night!
Well done, Elecraft and Earl!
