George,
one of the Austin Gurus of 802.11 technology advocates the 11b because it
has some much more installed equipment here. He also presented evidence
that none of the later letter versions reach the theoretical claimed speeds,
in a most interesting program that maybe we can post to a web site.
Plans here, are to try to use 11b to advance ham networks in support of
ARES.
The prices on the hardware on 11b in Austin are near rock bottom. They are
tearing down the "BBQ grill" (former Cable Max TV) dishes to convert them
to 2400 ham band.
These are frequently abandoned in place by TV company not wanting the
liability of taking them down from rental property. Our applications
involve point to point from city hospitals and water towers to public safety
EOCs.

Stuart
