And with all this talk of dipoles let's not forget the humble loop. Mine 
is small because it has to fit in my attic but it seems to work very 
well fed using a 4:1 current balun.

Bob is correct, a resonant length is not a requirement for an antenna.  As
long as you can feed it effectively with small losses, any length will
radiate effectively.
