Ten Tec has a line of simple kits called the T Kits as well as some pretty
sophisticated ones. The simple direct conversion receiver for any band is
a good starter kit. Documentation is excellent and parallels the fine
format of the Elecraft K2 manual, for example. The more advanced SWL
superhet receiver has a good parallel to the construction of the K2, and was
my "warm up" to the K2. It has a mother board and front panel board layout
like the K2. It has an all steel cabinet. There are several useful starter
kits, one of which is an external BFO to turn any SWL radio into CW capable,
(and maybe SSB capable) reception.
Ten Tec also has a less expensive power and SWR meter kit capable of battery
or wall wart power. It has both HF and VHF pickups and can be scaled into
two ranges. Top power of 200 watts, or 2 watts full scale at least. (I
have set my two ranges to do both QRO rigs and some QRPp rigs.) The VHF
pickup also functions as a relative SWR indicator on 440 MHz band! This is
in a steel cabinet not easily dragged off the operating desk by coax cables.
