I think you are right there, Phil. SLA batteries are not the best choice =
for deep cycling. The internal gel cell was no doubt intended primarily =
for portable QRP use: FD, hiking, general away from the shack =
applications. It needs to be kept as fully charged as possible lest it =
suffer diminished capacity.
Presently, I am using the KPA100 because I have been involved in some =
net activity and because I like the ext. keying jack on the rear for =
some TX projects. The gel cell KBT2/KAT2 top resides in a corner, =
attached to a smart charger. It doesn't need to be left on a maintenance =
charge if it is checked occasionally, but this makes it a no brainer for =
me. I still use a lead battery for my shack's DC needs, but it is =
substantially larger and definitely not integral being 150 Ah in size- =
