[Elecraft] KX1 #200 is alive!

Hi all,

KX1 is up and running. The only problem was that the DSS chip died after =
a few minutes- not sure what I did to it. Analog Devices mailed out a =
sample and I carefully replaced it using some surface mount rework =
equipment. The KX1 is HOT! An excellent receiver and my first QSO was =
with Finland (from Idaho) running a dipole on 20 meters using internal =
batteries. The KX1 is an amazing engineering achievement and will =
certainly give a boost to CW fans everywhere!

BTW, I have done some antenna modeling using NEC-2 to see how to =
configure the 25 foot sloping wire and 16 foot radial. It seems best to =
run the two wires in the same direction. I will have the ATU running =
this week and will try this out. I'm ready to order a K2 and sell my =
TS-570. I have ordered a 12 foot MFJ telescoping whip to build a man =
pack antenna for 20 meters. Trailing a short radial wire looks good on =
NEC-2 a loading coil might be needed for the trailing wire. I'll report =
in when I get this working.
