I think it has to do with the (very creative!) way Eric was able
to multiplex the POWER, SPEED, and one other knob all on the same
PIC line.=20

I've noticed it doesn't seem to happen as often if I find the
midpoint of the power "detent" - in other words, rock between
where it just kicks to 4.9 and 5.1 and find the midpoint of
the 5.0 setting.
