If a sponge is at all damp, it will draw heat from the iron.  I find a 
simple piece of paper towel is just as easy and does just as good a job as 
steel-wool pads.  I've tried them all. All of this is offered in the 
for-what-it's-worth category.  The bottom line, of course, is: you're free 
to choose.
