[Elecraft] Solder....again.....

The problem with using a 25 watt non controlled solder pencil is you
have to be a very good solderer (is there such a word). I've been
involved in field service all my life and for the 60's and 70's the
controlled one's were too large and expensive to take in the field and
did it all with a 25 watt pencil. However I was using it 8 hours a day
minimum and am very good at soldering and desoldering. HOWEVER I would
not even with my skill levels try to assemble the K2 with one...just too
touchy and possible to overheat parts or even to the point of lifting
traces.
I look at it this way...if you spend hundreds of dollars on a K1 or K2
why wouldn't you invest in a $100.00 (some are more and some are less)
soldering station. I also kept my Hako470 desoldering station for my
ham bench when I retired and couldn't live without it. Solder Pullits,
solder wick and bulbs just aren't good enough for me to work on this
radio.

I've been just reading the mail because I don't actually have an
Elecraft
kit yet. I got an inexpensive little Vectronics kit (not their soldering
course) to practice on as I haven't built anything with a circuit board
since the Heathkit HW 22A. My soldering looks bad, more of a glob, maybe
not
properly adhered. I don't want to get a TC soldering station unless and
until I'm really going forward with building a big kit.
My question is: I have a 25 watt soldering iron. Is that too little? The
circuit board and components seem awfully small. Nobody every seems to
mention actual iron wattages.
Thank you,
