[Elecraft] No signals nor noise??

Got to page 73; Receiver Pre-alignment. I do not get anything other than a
hiss. Audio gain wide open, rf gain full clockwise, 160m option not yet
installed. Using outside vertical antenna that is receiving signals on FT897
next to K2. Once I heard just a trace of a ssb signal on 7159, barely
discernible. I tried keying the 897 on the same freq as the K2 and heard
absolutely nothing. BTW, on page 61, 40m Band pass filter alignment, I did
not do it at the time as I had neither a sig gen nor antenna available.
On the previous page, 72; 40m Xmit alignment, everything appeared to check
out ok...the currents were just a little high, i.e., at 5W current drain was
1.6/1.7 and at 10w current drain was 2.28 vs book value of 1.8 to 2. I
assume that is "within the ball park"?
