[Elecraft] Strange Morse

Hi all,
One of these days I will learn all the functions in this DSP
gizmo......tonight we had our "CW Improvers Net" where we all call in on
SSB and then take turns at sending and receiving text and numbers at
various speeds according to ability and liason after each turn on
SSB. Speeds vary from 10wpm to 30wpm.....good practice for learners
building speed.
We set one BFO to the SSB freq minus the CW offset,so the sender can be
listened to by others on the SSB frequency. ie SSB on 3.580 and CW on
3.5792...or thereabouts. I usually listen in SSB mode until my turn.
Tonight I thought the Morse I was receiving in SSB mode sounded decidedly
odd, and was only able to copy it in "CW mode". The received CW sounded
like the "Ping" you get in a Submarine when being ranged by Sonar.
After the Net I investigated, and found I had the "Autonotch" switched in.
The DSP filter was doing its best to eliminate the morse I was trying to
copy....and doing a pretty good job.
I guess a "died in the wool" CW man wouldn't be caught dead listening to
Morse in SSB mode, but I still have to wonder if anyone else has been
caught like this! I won't be next time ( will I?)
Cheers.....Ron ZL1TW
