Martin,

I think verticals are lousy antennas, with the possible exception of large 
ones with good ground plane systems mounted well in the clear. Have you 
considered using a magnetic loop antenna mounted on a pole standing on your 
patio? I had one of the MFJ ones for a while and it beat the pants off any 
vertical I've tried. On the higher bands it compared quite well to a 
dipole.
