Only true in the southern hemisphere.  Here in the northern hemisphere, we
are further from the sun in the summer...  But not enough to make much
difference, as the earth's orbit around the sun is nearly circular.

Perihelion (closest to the sun) occurs on January 3rd when the earth is
about 147 million km from the sun, and aphelion (furthest from the sun)
occurs on July 4 when the earth is about 152 million km from the sun.

The seasons are a result of the earth's tilt on its axis of spin with
respect to the plane of its orbit around the sun.  The ~23 1/2 degree tilt
from perpendicularity helps make this planet a very interesting place!
