I like the idea of an Elecraft dummy load, both for soldering practice as well as having a "known good" tool for testing and alignment. I quickly built a rather ugly, but functional one by sandwiching 20 x 2W/1000 ohm/1% resistors between two squares of copper clad circuit board. Functional, but not exactly something I would be proud to pull out of my kit during field day :)

How about using a magnet as a heatsink for easy storage? Perhaps with a powder coated steel replacement side panel for the appropriate Elecraft rig? The steel panel would also give folks a place to attach other accessories (like mini paddles) as well.

In the interest of durability and simplicity, I would prefer no moving parts or external power be required.

Ditto, I would buy one if the kit was < $30 - $40
