[Elecraft] Beyond the K2, Part 1 of 3

It's a matter of personal taste. For me, I find s-meters very
bothersome in my visual field. All I care about is "can I hear the guy
at the noise floor or not." It's easy to become sensorially addicted to
watching an s-meter, which may take away processing capacity from most
efficiently copying signals.
That is why I'm glad the K2 s-meter can be turned off: It's a much more
elegant solution than what I do with my Omni (cover the s-meter with an
ugly piece of paper).

First of all, the K2 s-meter is just a little bit less sensitive than
the one on my TS850. Hardly a big deal, and as you well know, S-meters
vary all over the map.
Secondly, the one who should be embarassed is the guy who made a big
deal about it! If he's old enough to be allowed to operate an Alpha 99
he should know that S-meters are only useful for relative comparisons
and therefore it doesn't matter if one is a bit stingy and another
generous. This has been discussed over and over on the reflector, and I
personally have been listing to complaints, etc. about S-meters since
1956.
