Rich,

I believe I have addressed the safety issues of a direct connection to the
battery by including a fuse.  Take a look at my website www.qsl.net/w3fpr to
see how I have implemented the A&A Engineering charger connection to the K2.
You may also be interested in my modification to the charger itself to limit
the charging current - there have been concerns expressed a long time ago
about the possibility of overcharging the internal battery when the K2 is
turned on which fools the charger into thinking that the battery needs to be
charged.
