[Elecraft] Off Frequency K2

Ed:

Here's how I got my frequency display "zeroed" and I realize that what Ron
said is correct (i.e. My settings were "lucky") but here it is, for what
it's worth.

I went to page 98 in the manual. Using a Calibrated Signal Source

I used WWV at 10.000.00 mhz. (a reasonably accurate frequency standard).

I went to the WWV website to get the times when the various time ticks,
tones, and silent spots were transmitted.

I waited for the silent periods and zeroed the carrier on LSB. Going through
the whole procedure and Cal PLL. (yep it takes some time)

I had to do about 3-4 iterations to get it DOBA (a Nasa Term from Marisa
Tomei in My cousin Vinny 8-) or "on the nose".

I then set up Spectrogram with markers at 500 hz and 600hz (remember there
is a stated accuracy for the frequency display on the software too)

(I also use a 600Hz sidetone so you can check the spotting and CW display
using the 600 Hz tones on WWV if you do too)

I checked to make sure that the 500 hz tones and the 600 hz tones were set,
and that the audio announcements sounded like "AM".

As a cross check, tune in CHU on the 40 M frequency of 7.335.00 Mhz, their
20M frequency 14.670.00 Mhz, and last but not least 80M 3.330.00 Mhz.

(you may have to do these at different times over the course of several days
depending on your location and band conditions)

If you are as "lucky" as I was, you will get an excellent "zero beat" (I
actually indicate within +/-10 Hz) on all the frequencies.

OBTW IMHO It is a good test of the linearization algorithm used in the K2
when the receiver can track that closely across the bands.

I have had no problems "netting" my K2 with several of the nets and some
large roundtables (SSB). And the spot function works great on CW.

I am able to "sked" on a frequency by just dialing it up at the proper time.

Anyway, I have been most pleased with the K2. The use of Spectrogram and the
internal frequency displays made this a fairly easy rig to set-up once I got
into it.

I hope this helps. I know there are several different "schools of thought"
on how best to set up the K2, so I'm sure you will receive several different
methods.

I think that this reflector and it's members are one of the greatest
benefits of owning a K2. Good Luck!
